Thanks to its superior location and facilities, the Royal Hotel had become the town's principal inn, and one of its devotees was Charles Dickens, who frequently used it while visiting his business manager George Dolby, a resident of Ross on Wye, and planned his Celebrated American Book Reading Tour whilst staying here. Ross on Wye is famous for its Market Square, farmer's market and antique shops, and is one of the most popular tourist spots in the region.
